Innovating Your Business - The Power of the Brand

Remember back in the 1970's when generic grocery items were all the rage? The packaging was stark white with black lettering revealing the contents of the package. There's a reason generic products went away.
You never see a restaurant simply called "Restaurant" or a hotel just called "Hotel." Yet thousands of donut shop owners across the country have dug deep into their collective creativity... and the best they could come up with for the name of their shops was "DONUTS."

How about coming up with an actual name for a donut shop for starters? And preferably, a name that either suggests an excellent tasting donut or has some sort of local flair. Here's a quick list I came up with:

Killer Donuts - Best Darn Donut Shop - Guaranteed GREAT Donuts - Delightful Donuts - Ohio's Best Donuts

Yes, I know that the sign out front will cost a little more money than the plain vanilla DONUTS one, but remember, we're trying to take down Krispy Kreme! Spend a little extra dough on the sign. For sake of argument, let's call our Donut shop Ohio's Best Donuts. This way we can cater to not just high schools in the area.

Since our theme is Ohio, let's go ahead and decorate the place with some Ohio flair. Decorating advice should be taken from Starbucks, not from the local snow cone shop. Let's get some bright colors that make the place look lively, energetic, and fun. Built in bar-type seating around part of the perimeter of the store would be a nice touch. Make the tables and chairs a bit more substantial. Whatever tables and chairs Starbucks has, buy those. And while you're at it, buy the Starbucks CD collection and play it over built-into-the-ceiling speakers. I know it's just a donut shop, but it's not illegal to give the place some ambiance.
Next, let's hire a graphic designer to create a Ohio's Best Donuts logo and color scheme. This is important because we're going to use the logo and color scheme to actually start to brand our donut shop! Instead of using the generic white box to put the donuts in (or even worse, the generic white box with the word DONUTS and the address stamped on the front), let's instead get boxes printed with the name, logo, and slogan printed on them. Oh yes -- the slogan. How about "Not Just The Best Donuts On 3C Highway -- The Best Donuts In Ohio." Don't you like the not-so-subtle dig on the neighboring giant!?

Next up for branding -- signature donuts. Because we're a local shop, we have lots of flexibility to do whatever we want. For starters, how about a donut that's roughly TWICE as big as normal donuts. Add to that red, white, and blue glaze (or sprinkles) on them in the pattern of the Ohio flag? We could call it the "Ohio Giant" and sell them by the half dozen instead of the dozen because they're so freaking big. Now there's a donut people would go out of their way to buy -- and remember.

Now create signature donuts for each of the local high schools. How about a 'Mighty Comet' in white and green... and a orange and black 'Loveland Tigers donut? They could come in "Ohio Giant" size, regular size, and minis. People would go insane to buy these. School spirit and all that!

Then we could produce special occasion donuts -- Valentine's Day, Thanksgiving, St. Patrick's Day, you name it. Has anyone ever looked into making donuts in the shape of letters? How about this strategy... each day of the month they could create a donut with the letter that corresponds to that day of the month (A=1, B=2, etc.) and anyone who can prove their name starts with that letter can come in for a free letter donut that day only. It's worth a try. And don't tell me it's impossible to make a donut shaped like a letter.

So how much would all this branding cost? Certainly a bit more for the sign and furnishings. The logo wouldn't be too much. And signature donuts? Come on -- they don't cost anything extra. They're still just donuts! But now we have an identity that people would be interested in. People would remember these donuts -- and this donut shop. But we're just getting started.

Why Do I Choose Home Business?

When I was a little kid, my childhood was filled with fears, uncertainty, disappointment and tears. She wanted to leave, but she couldn't because she doesn't have financial capability to feed her three young children. I saw her hopelessness and what it meant by not having the freedom of choice.

So when I grew up, I made a promise to myself, that regardless of whether or not I have a happy marriage, I must have the financial independence so I can have my freedom of choice. As I saw my dad and his success running his own business, I know that I must have my own business too. There is an old saying that employment keeps people poor, and I believe that.

No matter how big is our paycheck, it would always be living from paycheck to paycheck.

I crave to set my own hours, my own pay.

I want to approve my own leave, create my own future.

One day, my friend shared with me about her part-time home business. I rejected her because I thought its a selling business. But I was interested with the product. As I was desperately aging, I decided to follow her advise to renovate myself inside out. And I'm very grateful that because of her sharing, I got back my health, my confidence and my compliments.

As I fell in love with the business values and culture, I know for sure that when I succeed in my home business, I would have grown to be a better person because in order to succeed in this business, I must be willing to help people get what they want and help them change their life for the better.

My faith in the home business keep growing as witness true stories of people who succeeded in their home business. I saw them having the freedom to live life in their own terms, they work because they choose to work and not because they have to work.

I saw them being able to spend more time with their family and live a fulfilling life. And I've seen how they are changing the world and fighting poverty. I want to be just like them.

Meet Daniel My New Little Executive Assistant!

I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I had to unexpectedly quit my full-time job in May of this year. In a way I knew the time was going to come because I was missing out on my son growing up and I wanted to be the one home loving, teaching, and taking care of him, but I wasn't planning on having to do it so quickly. I guess babies grow up faster than we hope. It didn't take me long to realize I had a very huge problem... His name is Daniel.

Of course, I love him more than anything in this world and he was the very reason I quit my job. Unfortunately, I didn't have any idea... how I was going to work at home and take care of him at the same time. To be totally honest I still haven't got a clue, but I came across an article the other day that talked about a mom that made her 16 month old daughter her executive assistant.

I know totally unheard of... Right?

My thoughts exactly, but I am now a stay at home mom that wants to work help and help support our family any way I possibly can. I've decided to try to make Daniel my executive assistant. I know from hours of research that everyone has their own ideas about setting up a workspace at home and that when you have children they say that you should have a separate place for your child!

I couldn't agree more, but I don't have a spare bedroom or den to use for an office in my home. We live in a small 1970's something single wide. With that being said, the only choice I have to set up my little office space is a little 5 foot corner against the back wall of my living room. Of course, Daniel has his own bedroom where he could go and play, but that never happens. Remember, me telling you he's needy, spoiled, and wild. I wasn't joking!

Daniel's a Little Man Trapped In a Big Man's Body!

Alright. You're asking, if I encouraged him to play in the same room while I was working? No of course not. However, one of the ways children learn while growing up, is by imitating actions of people who are around them. Which is you! Have you ever just stopped what you were doing and just watched how your child plays on a daily basis? I have and was totally surprised to see what Daniel did while not under my direct supervision. He's a little man trapped in a big man's body!

Alright, so I'm over exaggerating a little... but he is his dad's son and "works" throughout the day. I was really amazed to see how much he really does imitate his dad's actions. With this being said, I am going to take my new found knowledge and use it to my advantage. Hopefully it'll work because I haven't had much luck with anything else and I'm not getting as much as I'd like to accomplished. I am going to make him his own work area next to mine.

The Executive Assistant Will Be In Shortly!

I am going to make Daniel his own little office next to my office. In hopes that he'll enjoy and love working with me everyday. It'll be just for him. Donald and I will get him his own little table or desk whichever one we can find with a chair and set it up right next to mine. Then we'll get him his own little cell phone, some coloring books and crayons, and a work bench with some toy tools. We already have a TV and DVD player so he can watch cartoons.

Hopefully, he will love having his own little space where he'll be able to watch me, play alongside of me while I work, and we can both get things done. Right now, he wants my undivided attention and doesn't want me to do anything, but pay attention to him and him only. I'm not sure what else I can possibly do to make him feel more secure and assure him that I'm not going anywhere, that I can play with him, pay attention to him, and still work.

My New Little Executive Assistant

I am not sure if this will work for either of us yet, but at this point I have nothing to lose. I'm thinking that I can give him a couple little things that he can do throughout the day that will help teach him such as hammer a nail in his work bench or complete a puzzle. As he gets older I can start adding other things that will help him learn while we are in our little office working.
