As I saw the code that flashed on its tiny screen, my heart sank. I thought of the sleet that had been falling as I had fallen asleep a few hours before, and of the warmth of my cozy bed. The very last thing I wanted to do at that moment was to get up and go out in the cold. Unfortunately, there was little choice; I was the only Crisis Companion available during the week between Christmas and New Year. Within a few minutes, I was dressed and en route to the hospital to pick up a woman and her small children, on the run from an abusive husband, and take them to our shelter several miles out of town. As both a hotline operator and Crisis Companion for a community organization called Avalon, I had been trained to be an active listener, crisis counselor, and advocate for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. I thought of all the training I had received, as well as the passion which had driven and encouraged my work with Avalon, as I neared the emergency room of the hospital and prepared to meet my newest clients.



Every 15 seconds a woman is battered. 1 in 3 women and 1 in 10 men will be sexually assaulted during their lifetimes. 4 women in the United States are killed every day by their husbands or male partners. When I first heard these statistics in a Women's Studies course my Freshman year, I was astounded and thoroughly incensed. The more I read, the more committed I became to doing something which would bring about a positive change for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. It was then that I learned about and began working with Avalon, which was active on campus and in the community. Through its outreach programs, Avalon is dedicated to educating the community about the issues of sexual assault and domestic violence. It also offers a shelter, as well as advocacy and education, to survivors and their families.

Most of the time of a student is wasted in idle gossip, in roaming and in fruitless work. It is better to utilise the power of youth in socially productive work than to squander our precious time in loitering at the market place or before theatre hall.

If a student utilizes his time fruitfully and in socially useful work he gets contentment. Contentment is his satisfaction with his position. Students should remember that they are born for the improvement of the society by instilling the spirit of service in them. They can help the mankind in the best possible way.

If a student does not have the will or spirit to work he cannot succeed in life. We elevate our life style by doing well to the society. Social service is a voluntary work and one cannot be compelled to do a work. Social service fulfills two conditions. It helps one to utilise the leisure hours and the society gets benefited by it.

The value of social service should be taught to students to create inspiration in them. They should be enthused to pay their utmost strength and service to the society to make their existence meaningful.

Students should be taught how to serve the people of their country. They may teach reading, writing and arithmetic to the vast majority of illiterate Indians. They may render service to the members of the society in their time of need. They may relieve the suffering of the masses by nursing the sick.

Spreading education is no mean service. They can make the illiterate masses aware of their rights and duties. Once zeal is created amongst the students illiteracy may be wiped out. The Government cannot fulfill the ambitions of the vast mass of people.

Hence the students can guide the people in the right direction whether it is a question of digging canals or constructing educational institutions. Sympathy and fellow feeling should be imparted the students to do some noble works for the people.

People of our country are not aware of how to keep the atmosphere hygienic. People can be taught by students how to lead a life of cleanliness and how to keep their lives free from diseases.

Students can co-operate with people on matters of public interest such as education, sanitation, trade and commerce. Students can participate in cleaning drains, ponds during the leisure hours. They can help people during natural calamities such as earth quake, flood, drought, cyclone by collecting funds from different sources.

Students have a spirit to work but the guardians and, teacher should guide them in the right way. Social service can be safely managed if they can be guided properly. Our leaders should guide them in the right way.




As a volunteer for Avalon I have answered a crisis hotline, acted as a court advocate, helped clients apply for food stamps, and been on call in the hospital to work with women and children. While it would be flippant to say that I have enjoyed my work with Avalon, I have been profoundly affected by the women and children I have met through the organization. Working with Avalon has been the most fulfilling thing I have ever done. It is wonderful to see a woman that I have worked with, filled with pride when she finds a job and realizes that she is capable of supporting her family. It is indescribably uplifting to connect with a shy, withdrawn child in the shelter and see her smile as I read her a story. The work is seldom easy; the hours are often unpredictable and inconvenient, and the dedication required is sometimes overwhelming. But the rewards are extraordinary.

Use Cloth

Cloth napkins, cloths kitchen towels and even cloth diapers. Anytime you can use cloth, which is washable and reusable, you will save money and cut down on the amount of paper products going to the landfill. Even just cutting back on one roll of paper towel per month will save you about $20 in a year.


Fast Boil

Need boiling water to cook pasta or eggs? A tea kettle will boil water faster than an open pot and use less gas or electricity. Boil the water in a tea kettle, then transfer boiling water to cooking vessel.


Keep Water in Fridge

Keep bottles of water in your fridge to reduce the amount of dead air space that your fridge has to keep cool. Plus a cold bottle of water on a hot day will encourage you and your family to drink more water. And while you’re in the fridge, check its’ temperature. Keeping the fridge or freezer too cold uses unnecessary electricity. A refrigerator’s thermostat should be set between 37 and 40 degrees and the freezer should be set at 0 to 5 degrees.

Any food packages, like plastic margarine and cottage cheese tubs or glass pickle jars, can be washed and reused for food storage. Store leftovers or dried beans and pasta in these recycled containers and keep them out of landfills for a while longer. Small plastic containers with lids make great portable food and water bowls when traveling with pets.

This is probably easier and cheaper than you think. An effective green glass cleaner can be made by mixing one tablespoon of vinegar in one quart of water, pour into an empty spray bottle and use on any surface you normally would use glass cleaner on.
Baking sodas is a mild abrasive and will clean most any solid surface like kitchen counter tops and bathtubs. Freshen carpet by sprinkling a little baking soda on carpet and let sit for 15 minutes, then vacuum. Green clean at dirt cheap prices.

A 10 minute shower (most teenagers typically spend more) in a home with a non-water saving showerhead consume between 30-50 gallons of water per shower. Limiting the amount of water flowing from the shower also limits the amount of energy used by the heater. How does disinfection work?

Chemical inactivation of microbiological contamination in natural or untreated water is usually one of the final steps to reduce pathogenic microorganisms in drinking water. Combinations of water purification steps (oxidation, coagulation, settling, disinfection, filtration) cause (drinking) water to be safe after production. As an extra measure many countries apply a second water disinfection step at the end of the water purification process, in order to protect the water from microbiological contamination in the water distribution system. Usually one uses a different kind of disinfectant from the one earlier in the process, during this disinfection process. The secundairy disinfection makes sure that bacteria will not multiply in the water during distribution. Bacteria can remain in the water after the first disinfection step or can end up in the water during backflushing of contaminated water (which can contain groundwater bacteria as a result of cracks in the plumbing).

Disinfection mechanism

Disinfection commonly takes place because of cell wall corrosion in the cells of microorganisms, or changes in cell permeability, protoplasm or enzyme activity (because of a structural change in enzymes). These disturbances in cell activity cause microorganisms to no longer be able to multiply. This will cause the microorganisms to die out. Oxidizing disinfectants also demolish organic matter in the water, causing a lack of nutrients.

 I am often asked "What are ways to protect nature?".  It is good that people are concerned, but rather sad that many do not know what to do.

Better Family Planning

The best thing anyone can do to protect nature is to not have children, or to limit themselves to one child only, and to put off having children until at least age 30.  The biggest threat to nature is human populaton growth.  In the past 40 years the human population has more than doubled, this means there is less space for nature.

Not only have cities grown but the growing population means more land is consumed for agriculture, more trees are cut for housing and paper needs; nature is pushed aside as we rape the earth of its resources.  Family planning can save nature.

Better Pet Ownership

All cats and dogs should be spayed or neutered.  While this may not seem like it has anything to do with nature it does.  At this time more kittens and pups are born than there are homes for (over 4 million more each year in the USA alone) so allowing your pet to add more is not responsible to nature.  Homeless pets
kill native species to survive.

Keeping proper care of your pet also means your pet is not allowed to kill nature.  Cats should be kept indoors or kept in an outdoor cat enclosure when outside, dogs should not be allowed to run loose to kill rabbits or deer.

Have a Nature Friendly Yard

A lot of people claim they love nature but their yard is unnatural.  Nature wants native plants, shrubs and trees, not a perfect lawn.

Set out bird seed in the winter, but not if you have outdoor cats.

Do not use chemicals on your garden.  Herbicides and pesticides eventually wash away after a rain and make their way into rivers, lakes, and the ocean itself.  They not only kill things along the way, but are very destructive to coral reefs.

Change your Diet

Eating less meat can protect nature.  Vast areas of forest have been cleared to make way for cattle or for crops used as livestock feed.  Some songbird species will not nest if a forest is "too small", so even when patches of tress are left they are not enough for some birds to feel comfortable in.  Wild horses in the USA, although perhaps not truly natural themselves, are rounded up and removed because cattle ranchers want to use certain areas as grazing lands.  The horses are often slaughtered.

Nature is often killed so it does not take from what humans consider "their food supply".  The main reason for a dolphin, or seal, slaughter is so that dolpins and seals do not eat more fish.  A person who wants to save nature will stop eating fish.

Change your Shopping Habits

Everything we buy comes with an environmental price tag.  If you want to save and protect nature, you would simply buy less, or buy used.  Consumerism fuels the rape of our earth.  You might think cotton is environmentally friendly, for example, but what forest was cleared to grow the cotton, what chemicals were used, what native species were killed to protect the cotton plants?

Things that come from overseas are very destrucive to nature, shipping noises are a problem for whales and may cause them to be disoriented.  As well things that wash overboard have resulted in giant areas of garbage floating near the middle of every ocean in the wold, and the garbage consumed by wildlife who often die as a result.
